Raising a Doberman in California: desert or very hot, dry summers

Summer pavement in desert climates can burn a puppy's paw pads, so test the ground with the back of your hand and walk at dawn or after sunset. Dry heat dehydrates puppies faster than many owners expect — carry water on every outing. Summer cargo restrictions are common on flights into hot-weather airports, so we plan in-cabin or ground delivery around the weather.

Before you buy in California

  • Check your city or county rules on dog licensing, rabies vaccination timing, and any breed-specific ordinances
  • Confirm your lease, HOA, and homeowner's or renter's insurance allow Dobermans
  • Find a California veterinarian and book an exam within 7 days of your puppy's arrival
  • Look for a positive-reinforcement puppy class near you
