Doberman Puppy Buying Guide
How to buy a Doberman puppy responsibly — from checking that you are ready, to evaluating any breeder, to the documents you should receive.
1. Make sure you are ready
- Time: several training sessions and potty breaks every day for months
- Space: indoor living with the family and a secure yard or daily walks
- Budget: see our ownership costs
- Rules: check your lease, HOA, local ordinances, and homeowner's or renter's insurance for breed restrictions
2. Evaluate the breeder
- Is there a real, consistent business name and location?
- Will they share recent photos of the actual puppy?
- Can they show veterinary records and parent information?
- Are the sales agreement and deposit terms in writing before you pay?
- Do they answer questions patiently, without pressure?
- Is any license number they publish verifiable? (Ours can be checked on the USDA APHIS public search tool.)
3. Red flags to watch for
- Only stock-looking photos and no records for the actual puppy
- Requests for payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire to a personal account
- Surprise fees after you pay — for "insurance," "special crates," or "customs"
- Pressure to decide immediately, or claims that a deposit must be sent today
- Different names, phone numbers, or locations in different messages
See our Doberman puppy buying checklist for a printable list.
4. Choose the right puppy
Think about energy level, sex, and how the puppy will fit with your children or other pets. Ask the breeder what they have observed about each puppy's personality. Coat color is a matter of preference — it does not affect temperament.
5. Documents you should receive
- Written sales agreement with the health guarantee
- Vaccination and deworming records
- Veterinary exam record and, for interstate travel, a health certificate
- Registration paperwork as described for that puppy
- Feeding and care instructions
6. Prepare for pickup day
Get your supplies, puppy-proof your home, and book a veterinary appointment within the first few days. See our puppy care guide for a complete checklist.
