Doberman Puppy Care Guide
Everything to prepare before your Doberman puppy comes home, and how to care for them through the first months.
Prepare your home before pickup day
- A crate sized for an adult Doberman (about 48 inches) with a divider for the puppy months
- The same food the puppy has been eating — we tell you what it is — so you can switch gradually
- Stainless steel bowls, a flat collar with ID tag, a 6-foot leash, and a harness
- Safe chew toys and puzzle feeders
- Baby gates and a puppy-proofed area: secure cords, chemicals, shoes, and small objects
- An appointment with your veterinarian within the first few days
The first week home
Keep the first days calm. Show your puppy where to sleep, eat, and go potty, and keep the schedule predictable. Short naps in the crate with a chew toy help build a positive association. Expect some crying the first nights — it is normal, and it passes with consistency.
Feeding a Doberman puppy
Feed a complete large-breed puppy food, usually split into three meals a day until about six months, then two meals. Large-breed formulas help support steady growth. Because Dobermans are a deep-chested breed at risk of bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), avoid vigorous exercise right before and after meals and ask your veterinarian about bloat warning signs.
Exercise for growing joints
Puppies need play and short walks, not long runs. Avoid forced running, repetitive jumping, and long stair sessions until your veterinarian says your Doberman's growth plates have closed. Mental exercise — sniff walks, training games, and puzzle toys — tires a puppy out without stressing joints.
Grooming
The Doberman's short coat is low-maintenance: a weekly brush with a rubber curry or hound glove, nail trims every 1–2 weeks, ear checks, and regular tooth brushing. Start handling paws, ears, and mouth early so grooming stays easy for life.
Weather
Dobermans have a short single coat and feel both heat and cold. Use a fitted jacket on cold days and avoid hot pavement and midday heat in summer. Our state guides include climate tips for your area.
Your veterinarian
Book a wellness exam within the first few days. Bring the vaccination and deworming records we provide so your veterinarian can continue the schedule. See our health page for the common Doberman health topics to discuss.
