Choosing a Doberman puppy is less about finding the "best" puppy and more about finding the right match for your household. Here is how to think it through.
Start with your life, not the puppy
Write down how your days actually look: hours away from home, who will train the puppy, children's ages, other pets, and how active you are. A Doberman is a working breed that wants to be with its people. A busy, confident puppy can be perfect for an active family with time for training, and overwhelming for a quieter household.
Energy and personality
Within one litter you will often see a range: bold explorers, easygoing observers, and puppies in between. Ask the breeder which puppies settle quickly after play, which recover fastest from a surprise noise, and which seek people out. These everyday observations are more useful than any single "test."
Male or female
Males are usually larger and may mature a little later; females are often slightly smaller and quicker to mature. Both are loyal and trainable. Read our male vs. female Doberman guide for more.
Coat color
Black & rust, red & rust, blue & rust, and fawn (Isabella) & rust are the four standard colors. Color does not change temperament. Light cream puppies need extra sun care — see Doberman colors explained.
Health and records
Whichever puppy you choose, ask for the veterinary exam, vaccination, and deworming records, and for any health documentation on the parents. Our health page lists what to ask.
Make the decision
