The first month sets the tone for life with your Doberman. Here is a simple plan.
Before day one
- Set up an adult-size crate with a divider
- Buy the same food your puppy has been eating
- Puppy-proof one room and block off the rest with gates
- Book a vet appointment in the first few days
Week 1: settle in
Keep life quiet and predictable. Take your puppy outside after waking, eating, and playing, and praise every success. Short crate naps with a chew build a positive association.
Week 2: routines and the vet
Continue the vaccination schedule with your veterinarian. Start name recognition and "sit" in short, fun sessions.
Week 3: careful socialization
Introduce calm new people, car rides, and different surfaces. Ask your vet which places are safe before vaccines are complete. See socialization.
Week 4: build good habits
Add "down," "come," and loose-leash walking. Practice short periods alone so your puppy learns to settle. Look into a puppy class.
